Maile Giffin
Manager / Choreographer
History
Maile’s interest in Pacific and Maori culture stems from her upbringing in
Turanganui-a-kiwa and from her mother and family who are all from
Hawaii. Maile started dancing at the age of five and has continued her
passion for this art over many years. Ballet was her foundation growing
up but she has since placed a large focus on Polynesian dancing
especially Hawaiian. Making a move back to Hawaii, Maile took up
Hawaiian Hula, paddling (waka ama) and later Tahitian dancing. She has been
dancing Hula for many years now and was a regular performer in
Hawaii for 5 years in Waikiki. Upon her return to New Zealand
Maile joined two Hawaiian groups in Aotearoa, Mana-O-Hula and Halau
Hula Kahelelani No Aotearoa. She also completed a first year Te Ataarangi
Te Reo full immersion course at Te Herenga waka through NorthTec in 2010.
Maile believes language and dance/waiata is the root of a culture and
much can be learned when you immerse yourself within these.
Maile now focusses full time on Polynesian Entertainers, performing and training
new dancers for the company. November 2012 saw Maile, as one of three
choreographers selected for Pacific Dance New Zealand’s Choreographic Lab,
showcase the first Hawaiian performance piece. Using 6 dancers, 3 male and 3
female, the piece looked at the changes in Hawaii, from the unification of the
islands by King Kamehameha the Great, to modern day Waikiki with its high
rise hotels and condominiums.
